In this article, we’ll show you how to make your own bags using two different methods: sewing and no-sew. Sewing is the more traditional method, and it’s great if you’re already familiar with how to use a sewing machine.
If you’re not interested in sewing, or don’t have a sewing machine, don’t worry – the no-sew method is just as easy, and you only need a few supplies that you probably already have around the house.
1. Determine what kind of Make Your Own Bags.
There are all sorts of bags that you can make on your own and the options are really only limited by your imagination. Whatever the occasion, you can make the perfect bag to suit your needs.
There are lots of great patterns available for free online or you can buy a book or kit specifically for making bags. If you are new to sewing, look for a pattern that is rated easy or beginner.
Along with your pattern, you will need some fabric. Decide how big you want your bag to be and then add a few inches extra to account for seams. Once you have your fabric, cut it out following the pattern instructions.
2. Decide what materials you will need.
You will need to gather a few materials before you can start making your own bags. Firstly, you will need some sort of fabric. You can use any type of fabric you like, but some will be more durable than others.
If you are planning on using your bag for everyday use, it might be a good idea to use a sturdier fabric like canvas. However, if you are only planning on using your bag for light use, a thinner fabric like cotton will suffice.
3. Cut out your pattern pieces.
You’ll need two pieces for the body of the bag, and two for the handles. Cut out a rectangle for the bag’s body. The dimensions will depend on how large you want your bag to be. For the handles, you’ll need two strips that are about 3 inches wide and 18 inches long.
4. Assemble your bag.
Assuming you have your materials and tools ready, it’s time to start assembling your bag. The first step is to attach the handles to the main body of the bag. If you’re using handles that need to be sewn on, do that first. Next, it’s time to start sewing the main body of the bag together.
Start by sewing the bottom corners together, then move up the sides of the bag. If you’re adding any pockets or other features to the bag, make sure to add them now. Once the main body of the bag is complete, it’s time to attach the lining.

5. Install any handles or straps.
If you’re using handles or straps, chances are you’re making a purse, tote, or some other type of bag that will need to be held. Handles and straps can be made from a variety of materials including leather, fabric, or even ribbon. You can purchase handles and straps, or you can make your own.
6. Add any final details.
When you’ve finished sewing your bags and adding any reinforcing details like grommets or D-rings, it’s time to add any final touches. This is your chance to really make the bags your own and to add any features that will make them more functional or stylish.
One option is to add pockets to the outside of the bag. This can be useful for carrying small items like keys or a phone, and it can also be a nice aesthetic touch. You can add a single pocket to the front of the bag or multiple pockets around the bag. Another possibility is to add a zipper closure to the top of the bag. This will help keep the contents of the bag secure and can be particularly helpful if you’re using the bag for travel.
7. Enjoy your new bag!
